Getting hives every time I go outside

I have been battling hives for the last 7 weeks, keeping a diary and the main thing Ive noticed is that if I stay indoors, I dont get any new hives, regardless of what I eat or drink. But when I do go outside,I get a fresh new lot that night. This has never happened to me before. The other thing is, I got the flu vaccine a month before these hives started and I had never got this before.
Can anyone help or advise? I should add that I am post menopause, not on HRT and my doctor said this could be a factor as well.

  1. Hi ,
I'm sorry to hear what you've been going through.
You must be frustrated and uncomfortable.
Keeping a journal is a wonderful idea.
Exposure to sunlight can certainly cause hives. These are sometimes referred to as solar hives.
I'm including an article that may provide some helpful information: https://chronic-hives.com/clinical/rare-types
In the meantime, I hope others in this community will chime in with their personal experiences.

    1. I’m sorry you are going through this. Keeping the diary is an excellent way to document your outbreaks. I did the same thing with mine. I suffer from chronic hives that are heat triggered. I dealt with them for a few years before going to see an allergist. I’m also in the lucky percentage that has dealt with facial swelling. I would swell from my eyebrow down through my cheekbone. Honestly it looked like I had been beat up. The allergist has me on otc histamine blockers, prescription Montelukast and monthly xolair shots. Thankfully my chronic hives has been well controlled for the last 4 years.

      1. ,
Thanks so much for sharing your experience and kind words of support.
It's great to hear your chronic-hives are under control.

    2. Same! I'm to the point of only going outside to buy necessities once a week in the Spring. Get painfully itchy, swollen, nausea and diarrhea if outside too long. This only happens winter and spring. Allergens must be the main trigger. Summer and Fall, no hives unless there's some major stressor going on. In the process of pulling all my carpeting this summer and replacing with tiles. My dermatologist detects internal hives even when I'm not experiencing any symptoms. so they must be in the body ready to attack when the time is right.

      1. ,
        That is so frustrating.
I'm sorry you re having such a difficult time in spring and winter.
It sounds like you re doing all you can to get this under control (or at least some relief).
Sending positive thoughts for your efforts to pay off, Doreen (Team Member)

    3. Thank you. My hives are internal, so people don't realize the pain I'm in. I went to a dermatologist last year because I couldn't take the loss of sleep anymore. It burns beneath the skin. Was prescribed three meds. At least with those and the number of topical creams, it's manageable and I can sleep. I do think there's a stress trigger, too. A few years ago, I got divorced and moved, was in a major auto accident with surgeries involved, then lost my mother, so I swear the stress began all of this. I had put off going to a doctor because I was afraid it was imagination, but the dermatologist found hives through a skin test. I never knew such a thing existed.

      1. Thank you. It's been a bad few years. The surgery was successfully. Can use the leg, but not sure-footed like before the accident. I live alone and need to do everything myself, so there's no choice but to make the most of it.

      2. ,
I'm glad the surgery was successful and you are doing as well as could be expected.
I hope each day gets a little better...both physically and emotionally.
