OT Medication

I have been on 5 Zyrtec a day for the past 2 months. That is the only dosage that keeps my hives manageable, if I try to reduce dosage they come back with a vengeance and I have to go back on steroids. I’m concerned about the high dosage I’m taking and how long will be able to stay on this dosage. I would appreciate any feed back.

  1. Hi Vladimir1952,
Thank you for reaching out to our community. I am also concerned about the high dosage of the Zyrtec you're taking just to get relief throughout the day. Have you or the healthcare provider determined the source of the outbreaks? Has your healthcare provider suggested any alternatives other than the steroids and Zyrtec? One thing I can suggest is that you can reach out to a pharmacist and ask questions about the effects of taking high dosages of Zyrtec and any alternatives as well. - CJ, Community Moderator

    1. Allergy testing was negative for everything they tested for. I suspect it was the flu shot I got in conjunction with my Hashimoto Auto Immune Disease. The doctor suggested Xolair but I’m afraid of taking yet another shot in the inflamed state I’m in. I’ve been a an AIP diet since a week before Thanksgiving as well.

      1. ,
I have been on 4 Claritin and 4 Zyrtec a day for quite a while, probably quite a few years. I'm currently on 180mg of Allegra, and just got approval to double that, and add Xyzal and Benadryl as needed for flare ups. I do not use prednisone, but clobetasol cream in the event of a flare up. My medical team was not concerned regarding the high doses except for it losing its effectiveness over time.

My best suggestion, which echo's , is to speak to your doctor and a pharmacist about your concerns of long term use of high doses of Zyrtec.
