The Logistics of Getting Dressed During a Flare

Is it difficult for you to find hives-friendly clothing? My experience living with chronic hives includes a constant, fluctuating mix of itching and burning.

How hives affects my mental health

This can make it difficult to want to get dressed, which takes a toll on my mental health. Dressing up, something I once loved, became a major chore. It made me miss social gatherings, holidays, and even my own birthday. It can be an isolating experience.

However, after over half a decade of this being a major problem in my life, I’ve learned some extremely helpful tips along the way.

Choosing the right loungewear

Since I spend a large portion of my time at home, I invest in loungewear and pajamas. These pieces are mostly loose-fitted clothing. I look for fun prints and colors that allow me to express myself. I lean towards larger waistbands and flowy items so they don’t press on my skin.

Best fabrics for sensitive skin

In terms of materials, rayon, viscose, and cotton are some of my favorites. I always keep an eye out for 100 percent organic cotton, especially if it’s combed or ring-spun. If it’s both, I’m definitely getting it!

When shopping online, I look for terms like "soft" or "buttery" as hints that something may work. Checking reviews is also helpful.

My favorite go-to outfits

One of my favorite outfits is a simple combination of a crop top sports bra, leggings, and a flannel. It’s a little more form-fitted, but it’s not as painful as wearing jeans. This outfit allows me to go hiking, which brings me joy.

Sometimes, I switch the flannel for a sweater or cardigan. I find chenille quite comfortable.

Dresses

My other major go-to outfit category is dresses! I’m a big fan of midi dresses in particular. As someone who is shorter, they fit me similarly to a maxi dress. This is also helpful for going outside and providing a bit of material between me and things outside that might trigger my skin sensitivities. It also allows me to feel dressed up and even whimsical at times!

With dresses, I look for built-in bras and flowy bottoms. I try to find options without zippers or with high-quality zippers that aren’t harsh. I also look for elastics to be covered with fabric so they do not irritate my skin.

Using a seam ripper for tags

This tip may seem a bit obvious but removing any tags is so helpful! Some tags you can more easily rip off while others might require a seam ripper. If that’s the case, I promise it’s an easy process to seam rip! Of course, you can cut out the tag as well but personally I find seam ripping easier. It’s a small and affordable tool!

Buying duplicates

When I find an item I like, I purchase duplicates or the same item in other colors. Chances are good the fabric will feel similar to the original.

Shoes are another clothing option that can feel overwhelming especially as the last step of getting dressed. Personally, I prefer some comfy sneakers or hiking boots with personalized insoles that I’ve gotten for my flat feet. It’s been such a game-changer!

I hope you find this helpful and that it allows you to feel comfortable and enjoy fashion!
